HI 042: CERTIFICATE ON PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF MIGRATION AND ASYLUM
HI 042: CERTIFICATE ON PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF MIGRATION AND ASYLUM
Persons are forced to leave behind their homes, property and lifestyle to places where there might be discrimination, isolation and struggle to meet basic needs. It is very hard sometimes to loose or have a disconnect between self, loved ones and property that one has worked for, for a very long time. Migration can be be it voluntarily or forced- as a result of war, conflicts, natural disasters- can have tormenting effects to an individual’s social and psychological life. Sometimes we have cultural shock as a result of landing in a place that doesn’t support the cultural values that a person was used to there before.
The course is supposed to equip learners with skills and knowledge on how to deal with psychosocial and mental health problems associated with displacement and other culturally sensitive interventions.
The topics to be covered include the following;
- An introduction of the psychological and mental health consequences of forced migration
- Introduction to individual, family and community interventions for people living in camps and urban contexts
- The Inter Agency Standing Committee Guidelines for Mental Health and Psychological Support for emergency settings and their implications for intervention
- Culturally and contextually sensitive interviewing skills and working with translators
